About the Project
The Central Campus Recreation Building (CCRB) is comprised of several structures that were built between 1956 and 1978. With the approved projects to vacate CCRB, by relocating the School of Kinesiology into the Edward Henry Kraus Building and the Department of Dance to North Campus, we propose to replace the outdated CCRB with a new, approximately 200,000-gross-square-foot building for Recreational Sports. The project will allow greater access and opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to improve their health and well being. The proposed new facility will include modem gymnasiums, a track for jogging and walking, spaces for weight and cardiovascular training, group exercise rooms, aquatics, climbing areas, courts for squash and racquetball, locker rooms, and support and administration spaces. We examined the potential to reuse a portion of the existing building for the proposed activities and it is not feasible. The existing building consists of short, load-bearing spans with low ceiling heights and varying floor levels. Therefore, we propose to demolish the existing CCRB after it is vacant.
