Straw Wattle Detail

Technical drawing of straw wattle installation details with cross-sectional diagram and instructions.

Detail Text Description

A technical drawing of a straw wattle installation used for erosion control on slopes. In the left section, there is a cross-sectional diagram showing a cylindrical straw wattle with a minimum diameter of 8 inches set in a 2 to 3-inch deep trench. The wattle is secured with wood stakes that are either 18 or 24 inches long, driven into the trench until 2 to 3 inches remain exposed. The stakes are placed every 3 to 4 feet and driven perpendicular to the slope. Compact excavated soil is placed on the upslope side.

On the right, a list of numbered instructions details the procedure for installation. Guidelines for wattle spacing based on slope gradient are provided, ranging from 5 feet for a > 1:1 slope to 50 feet for a <6:1 slope. Additional notes mention referencing project drawings for specific wattle locations and spacing.

At the bottom, a note for designers specifies that certain details can be deleted based on site conditions.
